Farsi is spoken in Iran, and some of the populations in Iraq and the Persian Gulf states also use this language. Farsi is also known as Persian or Iranian Persian.

Farsi is another name to describe the Persian language. Out of all the Indo-Iranian languages, Farsi is the most popular and most commonly spoken. In Iran, there are about 40 million people whose native language is Farsi. It is also a popular language in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. Many of these countries were originally areas of the Persian Empire, which is why Farsi is still so popular in them.

The modernized version of Farsi comes from the Old Persian language which was used as far back as 6th century B.C. This means out of all the Iranian languages still used today, Farsi is the oldest.
Over the centuries, several different dialects of Farsi were created. In conversations, people who speak different dialects of Farsi can still understand each other. When the written language is much harder for them to understand in different countries.
There have been three versions of Farsi used over the centuries. The first version was used when the Achaemenid kings ruled the first Persian empire in the 6th century B.C. The second version was spoken when the Sassanian kings ruled the 2nd Persian empire in the 2nd century A.D. The third and current Farsi version started in the 9th century in Central Asia under the rule of the Samanid empire.
In Afghanistan and Iran, the Persian alphabet is like the Arabic alphabet, although their grammar and words have differences.
When Uzbekistan and Tajikistan were part of the Soviet Union, starting from the 1930s, the written alphabet of Farsi was like the Russian alphabet. Before that, it was based on the Arabic alphabet for all Farsi speakers.

Looking for a Farsi-English interpreter or translator?

Today, you still have people in Russia who speak Farsi because of the former Soviet Union’s existence.
When you read Farsi in written form, you go from right to left. It is a Perso-Arabic script which very much resembles the cursive writing that you’d find in English where letters connect. You don’t see any short vowels written down.
There are only long vowels and consonants written. However, you still pronounce the short vowels when you speak the language. There are certain dots called diacritic marks placed over a letter to indicate a particular sound. This helps students and foreigners learn the language better.

It is about time.
