Foreign language services for Haiti People
The origins of Haitian Creole come from various West African languages and the French language. Around the 17th century and 18th century, the language was developed in the western part of the island of Hispaniola. French colonizers and natives of Niger and Congo influenced the Haitian Creole language with their own languages. The Africans were actually slaves forced to do plantation work.
Some people refer to Haitian Creole as a type of French dialect. Although some of it was derived from French, Haitian Creole is a separate language because of its unique vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciations. France ruled Haiti up until the year 1804. That was when Haiti finally earned its independence and became its own nation.
However, the French language was still the primary language used by the government for almost the next 150 years. Only about 10% of Haiti spoke the French language because it was reserved for only the most privileged citizens who lived in big cities. Everyone else who lived in rural communities was taught Haitian Creole. It wasn’t until way later in 1961 when Haiti finally declared Haitian Creole to be one of its two official languages. French still being the other official language.

There are several variations of Haitian Creole when it comes to writing and print media. It doesn’t matter to many Haitians anyway because they’re either too poor to afford newspapers and/or they’re illiterate due to a weak educational system in the country. Not too many television states use Haitian Creole in their broadcasting either. Radio is the most popular form of media in Haiti which uses this language.
In the United States, there are Haitian communities comprised of Haitian expats which live in Boston, New York, and Miami. They often teach Haitian Creole in the schools of these communities.
