Japanese is a language which is spoken almost exclusively in the country of Japan. According to a 2010 census, there are about 125 million Japanese speakers in the world and about 120 million of them live in Japan.

Of course, there are Japanese immigrants in other countries who take their language with them too.
However, Japanese is not typically taught in schools outside of Japan. So, it would be unusual for somebody in a different country to be able to speak Japanese fluently if they never lived in Japan before.
There are three different writing systems used in the Japanese language. These systems are kanji, hiragana, and katakana. Kanji is derived from Chinese characters and its used to express the meaning of words. Katakana and hiragana both show you how to pronounce words in Japanese.
You could very well see each writing system intermingled together in one sentence. Speaking of which, Japanese sentences may be written in either horizontal rows or vertical columns. The former goes from top to bottom like in the west while the latter goes from right to left.
Japanese grammar is much easier to comprehend than English grammar. In English, there are so many verb/adjective conjugation rules, determiner articles, singular nouns, plural nouns, and gender-based nouns. In Japanese, most nouns don’t make a gender distinction. Adjectives and verbs have basic conjugation with hardly any exceptions.
When it comes to speaking Japanese, there aren’t too many different sounds used. In fact, many words are pronounced similarly, even though their meanings are different.

These types of words are called homonyms. If you change the length of the vowel sound, you can often change the meaning of the word. For instance, ojisan is the Japanese word for uncle. But if you lengthen the “i” and make it ojiisan, the word now means grandfather.

Speaking formally is very important to Japanese speakers. They way you’d speak to a stranger is different than the way you’d speak to someone you know. This is called “levels of speech” where the words and expressions are changed for the different people you’re talking to. To help you understand, there are five words in Japanese which are the equivalent of “I” in English. The word used depends on whether you’re talking to a superior, child, friend, unknown person, or family member. If you don’t use the right level of speech in your words, then the other person may feel offended. This is where foreigners have a tough time learning Japanese.

It is about time.
