Brazilian Interpreters and Translator Services

There are over 200 million people who speak Brazilian Portuguese and most of them reside in Brazil, naturally. But you may have people who immigrate to the United States or other countries that come from Brazil. These people will likely know Brazilian Portuguese better than any other language.

A lot of people assume that Brazilian Portuguese is the same as the Portuguese spoken in Portugal, Mozambique, East Timor and other Portuguese-speaking countries. However, the dialect of the Portuguese is different in many of these countries. With Brazilian Portuguese, for instance, it has its own dialect that is different than the dialect used in certain European countries.

Portuguese was influenced by many of the Classical Romance languages. But as Portuguese speakers started to emigrate from their native lands and move to other countries, it eventually caused a divergence in how the language is spoken. Brazilian Portuguese had a lot of influences from the Americas, especially from native South Americans and slave languages from Northern America.

Colonization

Portuguese colonization is what originally brought the Portuguese language to Brazil. During the 16th century, the first Portuguese speakers arrived in South American on their ships. As they settled in the country, it slowly spread throughout the land. There were still many African languages used in Brazil at that time because of slavery.

During the 16th century and 19th century, millions of African slaves were brought to the Americas. We all know about how slaves were brought to North America while the United States was still comprised of colonies. But what you might not realize is that African slaves were also brought to Brazil by Portuguese settlers. The Atlantic slave trade was responsible for transporting 4.9 million slaves to Brazil between the years 1501 and 1866.

Throughout that period, the European Portuguese language and African languages were picked up by people. Certain words and vowels of each language got placed together to form a modified version of Portuguese, which we know as Brazilian Portuguese. By the time Portuguese became the official language of Brazil in the 18th century, it was already a different version of Portuguese than the original European Portuguese.

The good news is the dialects are not that far apart in their differences. In fact, there are a lot of similarities between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese. But if someone were to speak European Portuguese to a Brazilian, they might not understand everything clearly. The dialect of Brazilian Portuguese is more localized to that one country and the people who were raised in the country.

The only other countries that have a high percentage of Brazilian Portuguese speakers include

  • Guyana
  • French Guiana
  • Suriname
  • Uruguay
  • Paraguay

All of these countries are located in South America. You won’t find too many Brazilian Portuguese speakers in any European countries.

Reform

In 1990, there was an effort made by the Community of Portuguese Language Countries to close the gap between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese languages. The organization attempted to change the Portuguese orthography so that the standards of each language would be more of the same. It took another 26 years for the reform to be completed and enforced in Brazil. Other Portuguese-speaking countries in Europe have now started utilizing the new orthography as well.

Therefore, anyone from Brazil who travels to Portugal or vice versa should have an easier time reading Portuguese in each country if they’ve already learned the modified orthography.
