The Somali language is what’s known as an Afroasiatic language. It is the official language spoken in the Eastern African country of Somalia. In Ethiopia, there is a Somali region of that country which speaks Somali too. And at the Horn of Africa, it is the national language of a small country called Djibouti.

Kenya has also recognized the language too. In total, there are about 15 million people in the world whose native language is Somali. Most of them reside in these 4 African countries.

There are 3 groups of dialects for the language. The dialect that is used depends on which region of Somalia the person is from. The Northern Somali dialect is considered the Standard Somali dialect and it is what most of the speakers use. However, there is also the Banaadir dialect which is used in southeastern Somalia along the Banaadir coastal region.
There are roughly 1.65 million people there who speak this dialect, although they understand Northern Somali too. The last one is the Af-Ashraaf dialect, which is not used so much nor is it understood that well by Northern Somali speakers.

Before the Latin alphabet was adopted in 1972, the Somali language used the classic Osmanya script for its writing. This was created in 1922 as a way to adopt an Arabic-style alphabet for the language.
The Latin alphabet is officially used to write the Somali language. Usually, you’ll see syllables in Somali which have 1 vowel or consonant at the end of them. You don’t see clusters of consonants at the end or beginning of words. Root words have up to 2 syllables. As for the Somali vowels, they are actually phonemes which can change the meaning of a word. It all depends on the length of the vowel. For instance, if there is a long vowel, then you’ll see a double vowel used. If there is a short vowel, then you’ll see one vowel used.

But the problem with the Arabic style was that it could not dictate tones. Things like gender, case, and number were hard to express. This all changed when the Latin alphabet was officially adopted and accepted.

It is about time.
