The Swahili language is one of the two most popular languages spoken in Africa, the other being Hausa. Swahili is the native language of at least 5 million people in the world. There are also a whopping 135 million people who speak Swahili as a secondary language.

Swahili is the official language of Kenya and Tanzania, which is where most of the native speakers are from. You’ll also find Swahili speakers in Rwanda, Mozambique, Malawi, Burundi, United Arab Emirates, Uganda, the United States, and South Africa.

Swahili is a second language to most of its speakers because of English colonization along East Africa. You’d likely find Swahili speakers in these countries who speak English too. Swahili is still used a lot in commerce, television, education, and politics.

In fact, the African Union uses Swahili as one of its official languages. It is the only one of its official languages to have African origins too. The rest of the African Union’s official languages include English, French, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Don’t forget that Africa has about 2,000 languages which are unique to its continent. Therefore, Swahili is on the top of that list in terms of popularity. Swahili is part of the Niger-Congo language family.
Much of the influence on this language came from the Arabic language. Since Arabic traders regularly inhabited eastern Africa, they brought their Arabic language with them. This Arab influence led to the development of Swahili in many East African nations.

In the pronunciation of Swahili words, it has 36 consonants and 5 vowels that are phonemes. These are letters which may look the same, but their sounds can change the meaning of the word. The syllable structure of Swahili is simple enough.
There are usually no consonants or consonant clusters at the end of syllables. They normally end with a vowel. The stress of the words is placed on the second to last syllable, also known as the penultimate. There are no tones in Swahili either.
Due to the Arabic influence on Swahili, you won’t see similarities between the English and Swahili words. For instance, the Swahili word for city is “mji.” The Swahili word for country is “nchi.”
