The Vietnamese language is the official language of the country of Vietnam. It belongs to the Austro-Asiatic language family’s Mon-Khmer branch. There are at least 76 million people in the world who speak Vietnamese as their first language.

When you consider the population of Vietnam is about 75 million people, you can see that most of the speakers come from this country.

Of course, immigration has led to Vietnamese being spoken outside of Vietnam too. That is why you can find Vietnamese speakers in the United States, United Kingdom, Thailand, Senegal, Philippines, Norway, Finland, China, Canada, Cambodia, and Australia.
Throughout Vietnam, the Vietnamese language is spoken a little bit differently in each province. The farther away the provinces are from one another, the bigger the dialect difference.
The Vietnamese language was largely influenced by the Chinese. Before the western influence over the language, the Vietnamese writing system was based on Chinese characters. Between the 10th century and 2nd century B.C., Vietnam was actually a province of China. This explains China’s heavy influence over the now country.
Eventually, Vietnamese incorporated the Latin alphabet derived from the French alphabet. As a result, modern Vietnamese people no longer use Chinese characters anymore. The only Vietnamese citizens who can read the Chinese characters are the native Chinese speakers who’ve immigrated there.

If you were to try and communicate with a specific ethnic tribe in the country, they’d use a slightly different dialect and vocabulary. However, the national education standard for all Vietnamese people is the Hanoian dialect. Anyone in Vietnam who learns this dialect will be considered well educated.
Like most Asian languages that are tonal languages, Vietnamese speakers need to show respect to their listeners who are of a higher social rank. The Vietnamese word order of a sentence must be the subject first, the verb second, and the object third.
The Latin alphabet of Vietnamese consists of 29 letters, 12 vowels, and 17 consonants. Approximately 22 of its letters are taken from the Roman-based alphabet. There other 7 letters are modified versions of Roman letters. These include ă, â, đ, ê, ô, ơ, and ư.
