The Chinese language is spoken in the Republic of China. There are various regional forms of the Chinese language, but the most popularly used one is Mandarin. Anyone who learns to speak Mandarin will likely be able to communicate with just about any native Chinese person.
With just over 1.3 billion people, China has the biggest population in the world. Each one of these people speaks at least some regional version of the Chinese language. Aside from Mandarin, there is also Cantonese, Min, Jin, Wu, and Shaojiang. But Mandarin is the official form of Chinese that most people speak in mainland China as well as Taiwan. It is also 1 of 4 official languages in Singapore, 1 of 2 official languages in Hong Kong, 1 of 2 official languages in Macau, and 1 of 6 official languages of the United Nations.
Chinese characters were first used about 3,500 years ago. There may be different spoken language variations of Chinese, but the writing system is mostly shared amongst them. It does not use any formal alphabet which has Roman letters that represent sounds. Instead, Chinese writing comes in the form of symbols (or characters) known as logograms. These logograms don’t indicate sounds or how to pronounce words. They just have meanings that translate into words. The way these words are spoken depends on which form of Chinese the person knows and speaks.

In the 1950s, China introduced a special writing system called Hanyu Pinyin for Mandarin. This system focuses on the sounds of Chinese words by writing letters to represent them instead of Chinese characters. It was inspired by the Latin alphabet, so anyone who understands the sounds of letters can understand how to sound out these Chinese words. This allows people who speak different forms of Chinese to understand the pronunciation of the sounds. This is something that cannot be done with just Chinese characters alone.
Chinese is the number one most spoken language in the world. Out of the 1.3 billion who speak it, roughly 1 billion of them speak Mandarin. They are not all in China either. Due to immigration, there are now Chinese speakers in western countries too, such as the United States, Brazil, and Peru. It is not the official language of these countries, but it is a secondary language you hear spoken quite often by people in big cities there. Interpreters of the Chinese language are more common than you might think.
