Depositions are standard legal practices in the United States and other developed nations in the world. When attorneys want to find out what a witness knows about a particular legal case, they have the witness attend a deposition first. The witness must give a sworn statement under oath about what they saw or heard concerning the case. Depositions are not held in courtrooms, but the witness testimony is still given under oath just the same.

The purpose of a deposition is to discover what a witness knows before a trial or courtroom proceeding. That way, the attorneys will already know what the witness is going to say on the witness stand. It allows attorneys to prepare their line of questioning ahead of time, so they are not surprised by what the witness says.

Of course, not all witnesses are going to speak the same language. In a country like the United States, for example, you have a multicultural society with people who speak many different languages. It is only natural that a witness might not always speak English. But since American legal proceedings require English to be used, an interpreter will be needed to translate the witness’s testimony during the deposition.

Our company offers deposition interpreter services that can be performed online or in-person. Since most depositions must be conducted in-person, you will need to make an appointment with us for an on-site interpreter to meet with you or your lawyer. We have deposition translators  available in every major city in the United States. We’re confident that we can have a qualified deposition interpreter available on the date in which you need them.

The Difference Between a Deposition Interpreter and a Standard Interpreter.

You might wonder what the difference is between a deposition interpreter and any other translator? Well, there is actually a big difference between the two.

Standard interpreters might not have any experience with translating legal terminology between two different languages. A lot of these translators can only translate basic conversational language, but nothing that pertains to law or courts. Since depositions are legal proceedings, then a lot of advanced legal terminology will be thrown around by the attorneys on both sides. A standard interpreter would not be suitable to use in this case.

A deposition interpreter, on the other hand, is trained to understand legal terminology in each language they speak. Witnesses need to understand what the attorneys are trying to stay to them at the deposition. The only way this can happen is if the deposition interpreter can translate the terminology in a way for the witnesses to understand it. Otherwise, it will be challenging to get a clear and accurate testimony from the witnesses if they don’t understand the questions asked by the attorneys.

On the flip side, the attorneys also need to understand what the witnesses are saying on the witness stand. Their testimony could be vital for determining the outcome of a particular legal case, especially if it is a criminal case. A deposition interpreter ensures that all witness testimony is understood by the attorneys and the stenographer that creates transcripts of the deposition.
