Cape Verdean Creole is one of the creole languages. Each language was developed from mixing other languages. Creole began after European settlers arrived on the Caribbean islands and African islands. They introduced their languages and cultures to the indigenous islanders, who eventually merged these languages and cultures with their own.
In the case of Cape Verdean Creole, it is derived from the Portuguese language. The origins of Cape Verdean Creole date back to the 15th century. European explorers sailed to the Atlantic’s southern and western waters to search for a new world. A crew of Portuguese explorers came across an uninhabited island right off the west coast of Africa. The island would later be called Cape Verde. The explorers settled and colonized the island
During the 16th century, the Atlantic slave trade began. Europeans enslaved Africans and brought them to their colonies on ships. Many colonies had been established on tropical islands in which the Europeans conquered previously. Cape Verde was one of those islands. Since there were no indigenous tribes to enslave on the island, the settlers found a more convenient way to find slaves.
Cape Verde is only 385 miles from the African continent. The close distance made it easier for slave traders to bring African slaves to the island. Over time, the African and Portuguese cultures started to blend and merge, which ultimately led to Cape Verdean Creole. The language has remained on the island for the last four centuries.
The native speakers refer to it as Kriol or Kriolu. But to the people of the western world, it is easier to remember the name Cape Verdean Creole. The two official languages of Cape Verde are Cape Verdean Creole and Portuguese. It is estimated that 871,000 native speakers of Cape Verdean Creole exist in the world. Virtually all of them live on the island.
In the United States, nearly 100,000 Americans come from Cape Verdean ancestry. The census does not indicate whether they can speak Cape Verdean Creole or not. But even if 100,000 Americans or residents can speak the language, it is still a tiny percentage of the country. However, it doesn’t mean you won’t run into somebody who does speak the language.
Cape Verdean Creole language professionals are difficult to find in the west. It is such a rare language that it requires somebody from Cape Verde to understand it fluently.
