The Polish language is primarily spoken in Poland; where it is the official language. It is the most popular Western Slavic language and one of the European Union’s official languages. Polish is also spoken in the border towns and cities of Poland’s neighboring countries, such as Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine.

There are about 40 million people in Poland who speak Polish as their native language. Another 10 million people in other countries speak Poland as either a first or second language. A significant percentage of these Polish speakers immigrated to the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada during World War II.

The Polish alphabet follows the classical Latin alphabet. However, the Polish alphabet has 9 letters which are not found in the English alphabet. These extra letters are as follows: ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, and ż. Notice the diacritical marks used on these letters. They indicate a different pronunciation for those letters. There are also 3 letters in the English alphabet which are not in the Polish alphabet: q, v, and x.

In total, the Polish alphabet consists of 35 consonants and 10 vowels. Certain words may have 2 letters combined to create 1 letter sound. English does this with “qu” or th.” In Polish, there are 7 possible combinations, such as “cz,” “ch,” “sz,” “rz,” “dz,” “dż,” and “dź.” Polish has a lot of similarities to other Western Slavic languages like Slovak and Czech.
In some ways, parts of it are like English too because letters like “f” and “m” are pronounced the same in both languages. But then you have some differences in pronunciation of other letters. For instance, the “w” in Polish sounds like the “v” in English. Then you have Polish sounds that are unique to the Polish language and English sounds that are unique to the English language.

The Polish language is believed to have originated sometime during the 10th century A.D. In the Greater Poland region of this era, the Polans tribe existed there. Mieszko I was the leader of the tribe at this point. He was responsible for developing what would eventually become the Polish state. This is when Christianity, baptism, and the Latin alphabet were adapted into the Polish culture.
The alphabet was a breakthrough because people did not write Polish up until that point. But then, they started to learn how to form Polish words with the letters and write them down. This, of course, was the Old Polish language. It eventually evolved into the modern Polish language that is spoken today.
