The Spanish language is the most popular Romance Language spoken in the world. It is the official language of approximately 22 countries. Most of these countries are in South America and Central America, despite the origins of Spanish coming from the European nation of Spain.

You’ll find Spanish spoken in Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, Paraguay, Venezuela, Uruguay, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, just to name a few countries. It is also a secondary language for many people in the United States, Canada, and Morocco.

There are more than 420 million people whose native language is Spanish. There are also at least 80 million people who speak Spanish as a second language. The origins of Spanish are rather interesting. It came from a region of Spain called Castilla, which can be found on the Iberian Peninsula. In the 9th century A.D., the only people in the world who spoke Spanish existed on the Iberian Peninsula. The language was influenced by the Vulgar Latin; first introduced by the Romans.

Okay, so how did Spanish reach the Americas? In the early 15th century, Spanish explorers began their ocean voyages to discover new lands in the world. When they arrived in Central America and South America, they brought their Spanish language right along with them. The dialects they used were both Andalusian and Castilian.

Administrative centers were established in Lima, Peru and Mexico City, Mexico. These were really the first areas of the Americas to speak Spanish regularly. Then, as Spanish colonization continued, more areas of Latin America were speaking Spanish too.

As for North America, there were Spanish settlements there too. The now Saint Augustine, Florida was the first settlement there. In the 1600s, Spanish colonizers in Mexico had expanded their exploration to the western half of the now United States.

The Spanish language was brought to present states like Texas, New Mexico, California, and Arizona. Even after the Mexican War led to the United States taking over these territories in 1848, the language remained there. That is why to this day, these states have the highest Spanish speaking population in the country.

It is about time.
