Hawaiian is the native language of the U.S. state of islands known as Hawaii. English and Hawaiian are the two official languages of Hawaii. You probably already know a few Hawaiian words already like Mahalo or Aloha.
It is estimated that about 25,000 to 30,000 people speak Hawaiian as a native language. Most of them live in Hawaii, while some reside in the mainland United States.
Captain James Cook was a British explorer and the first European on record to discover the Hawaiian Islands. He arrived at the islands in the year 1778. At that time, only Hawaiian was spoken by the natives on the islands. It wasn’t until 1820 when American missionaries went to Hawaii and introduced a Roman-based system of writing to the Islanders.
By the 19th century, the Hawaiian language was thriving in the then-independent kingdom. Newspaper publications were printed in Hawaiian and the literacy rate amongst citizens was high. Several books and religious scriptures were translated into Hawaiian too. This was helpful in introducing the natives to outside cultures.
Hawaiian Interpreters & Translators Services
As outsiders kept traveling to the islands of Hawaii, they brought with them diseases like leprosy and smallpox. These diseases killed many of the native Hawaiian speakers. Meanwhile, the travelers who came to Hawaii introduced their languages to the natives too. These languages included English, Japanese, Ilokano, and Chinese.
Once the 20th century came around, English started to dominate the islands and replace Hawaiian as the most spoken language there.

By this point, Hawaii was already a U.S. territory. It eventually became a state in 1959. It is the only state in the United States which has its own separate native language. Even though Hawaiian was the first language used in Hawaii, it became an official language of the state in 1978. English, of course, is the second official language because that is the official language of the United States.

Before the islands were colonized, Hawaiian had several dialects to the language. Unfortunately, most of these dialects no longer exist. The Niihau dialect is all that remains amongst those who still speak Hawaiian. The University of Hawaii is one of the only major schools in the world which teaches Hawaiian.

It is about time.
